Merapi eruption - December 1822, Indonesia
Submitted by administrator on Tue, 13/03/2007 - 03:19. Volcanic activity – Merapi
|
Explosive eruptions and dome collapses on 29 and 30 December 1822 produced pyroclastic flows towards the south-east of the volcano. Heavy rainfall that lasted for 8 days after the main eruption triggered hot lahars that overflowed river channels to flood adjacent land. The eruption lasted until 10 January 1823 when the volcano entered a brief period of dormancy. Eight villages were destroyed and up to a 100 lives lost due to pyroclastic flows and hot lahars.
