Merapi eruption - November 1930, Indonesia
|
Numerous volcanic tremors were followed by lava effusion, starting on 25 November, which continued until the middle of the following month. On 18 - 19 December 1930, large pyroclastic flows were generated, travelling up to 12 km from the summit, and covered an area of around 20 km2. Thirteen villages were destroyed and 23 others severely damaged, resulting in a death toll of more than 1,300. Activity ceased in September 1931 although rainfall reworking ash deposits ensured that lahars continued to be generated for a few years.
