On 5 March 2002 at 16:09 local tima a magnitude 7.5 earthquake struck Mindanao, affecting the provinces of Sarangani, South Cotabato, Sultan Kudarat and Davao del Sur. The main shock was followed by 359 aftershocks. The earthquake also triggered a breach in the crater wall of the Mount Parker volcano and a portion of it fell into Lake Maughan at the top of the volcano.
