The initial flood (that began in late 1987 and continued throughout 1988) was caused by the synchronisation of peak flow of the Ganges, Brahmaputra and Meghna Rivers. All four types of flood (storm surge flood, rain flood, flash flood and riverine flood) that occur in Bangladesh contributed to the 1988 flooding1.
During this event, 52 percent of the country was inundated with 52 districts affected2.
