Tsunami - April 2007, Solomon Islands
A powerful magnitude 8.0 earthquake struck near the Solomon Islands on Monday, prompting a tsunami alert across the Pacific Ocean in countries such as Indonesia, Papua New Guinea and Australia.
The tsunami struck the Solomon Islands particularly affecting the town of Gizo on the island of Ghizo1. The 4 to 5 m tsunami also resulted in deaths and damage to the islands of Simbo, Choiseul and Ranunga. Approximately 85 percent of the Solomon Islands' 500,000 population live in rural areas, and the western province - where the disaster occurred - is one of the most remote parts of the country2.
