On 27 October 1959, the category 5 hurricane struck west Mexico with windspeeds reaching 260 km/h. Heavy rains associated with the storm triggered a massive landslide in the hills near Minatitlan (in the state of Colima) claiming 800 victims. The slide also uncovered hundreds of venomous snakes and scorpions that killed tens of people more in the aftermath.
