Tsunami - July 2006, Indonesia
On 17 July 2006 at 15:19 local time an earthquake measuring 7.7 on the Richter scale struck 245 km south of western Java's south coast at a depth of 48.6 km. The earthquake generated a tsunami comprising two or three waves with run-up heights in excess of 7 m in places. The waves arrived on the Pangandaran coast 30 minutes after the main shock, taking more than 500 lives and displacing more than 50,000 people1.
The worst affected region included the town of Ciamis, where waves up to 7.67 m high travelled as far as 2 km inland, destroying 95 percent of the fishing fleet of 7,200 boats2. Wave run-up heights were 6-7 m at Widara Payung and 5.2 m at Pameungpeuk3,4.
