One of the most destructive historic earthquakes to hit the Caribbean occurred on 7 June 1692 at 11:43 local time at Port Royal, Jamaica. Part of the coastal town subsided below sea level due to liquefaction of the underlying sands and gravels[1]. The magnitude has been estimated as being as high as 8.0 on the Richter scale[2].
