A tsunami was triggered by the devastating Port Royal earthquake on 7 June 1692. The sea was reported to have withdrawn up to 1.6 km exposing the sea floor before inundating the shoreline. Of the 2000 fatalities recorded as a result of the earthquake, the number of deaths due to the tsunami is unknown.
