On 16 August 1976, at 12.11 local time, a magnitude 7.9 earthquake struck off the island of Mindanao generating a large tsunami that devastated 700 km of coastline bordering the Gulf of Moro in the North Celebes Sea. The cities of Cotabato, Pagadian, and Zamboanga were worst affected, along with the provinces of Basilan, Lanao del Norte, Lanao del Sur, Maguindanao, Sultan Kudarat, Sulu, and Zamboanga del Sur. Run-up height was recorded at 4.3 m on the island of Basilan.
